Currently, season 7 of Outlander is still in production, but despite this, Starz has officially confirmed season 8. However, the bad news is that the eighth season will be the last of the popular drama. Read on to find out what we know so far about the final seasons and the upcoming prequel series.
Outlander season 8 confirmed by Starz
Outlander first premiered on Starz in 2014 and revolves around a World War II English combat nurse from 1945. She is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war, only to be sent back through time after touching a magical stone in Scotland. In fact, she ends up in the year 1743.
Variety reports that Outlander has been renewed by Starz for season 8. However, the network also confirmed that this will be the show’s last season.
This comes months before the premiere of season 7 of Outlander on Starz, which is slated for a summer 2023 release. This will then be followed up by the final season 8 on a date to be advised.
Prequel series: Outlander: Blood of My Blood
While fans are no doubt disappointed that the eighth season of Outlander is the last, there is good news about a prequel series. Titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood, it has already been greenlit to start production, but no release date is yet available.
Kathryn Busby, Starz President of Original Programming, teased an epic conclusion to Claire and Jamie’s love story in seasons 7 ad 8. Meanwhile, she said:
For nearly a decade ‘Outlander’ has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion. But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.
More episodes to come
More good news for fans is that season 7 of Outlander will have 16 episodes and is based on the novel, An Echo in the Bone by Gabaldon. Meanwhile, the writer is confirmed to be involved in the development of the prequel series featuring Jamie’s parents. Meanwhile, season 8 won’t have as many episodes as season 7. In fact, there will be 10 episodes and will see the conclusion to Claire and Jamie’s love story.
Season 7 will premiere at some stage in the summer of 2023, but no firm date is available for season 8, or the new prequel series.
