As with the original series, Yellowstone, 1923 is currently on a midseason hiatus and only returns on Sunday, February 5. However, when the prequel does return there are predicted to be some major changes for the Dutton family. Brandon Sklenar teases a difficult homecoming on 1923
When the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, returns after its current short break, there are to be major changes for the Dutton family. Fans will recall that in the third episode of the prequel, The War Has Come Home, the Dutton family was ambushed by Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) on their way home to the ranch from town.
This leads to the death of John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) but also leaves Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) in a grave condition. This prompts Spencer Dutton to be called home from Africa. Meanwhile, it was in a letter that Spencer didn’t read for a few months.
Meanwhile, by the end of the midseason finale, War and the Turquoise Tide, Spencer is finally coming home. However, according to Brandon Sklenar, this isn’t going to be a happy homecoming. Speaking to The Wrap, Sklenar explained that his character’s return is more complicated than that, saying:
I can say that it’s not going to be a joyous homecoming, that’s for sure.
I think Spencer’s coming in hot and he’s got a lot to handle when he gets home. And it’s not going to be an easy journey to get there.
Where is Spencer on the Dutton family tree?
Originally, John Dutton Sr. was presumed to be the grandfather of Yellowstone’s John Dutton. However, fans are now speculating that maybe Spencer is actually John’s grandfather. Dale had previously said that even the show’s stars need a flow chart to keep track of the family. Moreover, he isn’t clear about the family tree, a fact that could change depending on what Taylor Sheridan has planned, saying:
I don’t know the tree. We need a flow chart. I’ve seen them online when people have tried to create them.
I don’t know if those are accurate or not. And here’s the thing, this is Taylor’s universe. We could be saying one thing or thinking one thing and Taylor can decide something else and we’ll be watching 1942 and realize it’s a little different and he’ll change it up.
Of course, one of the major things that attract viewers to Yellowstone and its prequels is the layer of mystery the creator adds to the series.

While previously fans got to watch 1883, 1923 is the next installment of the Dutton family origin. The prequel introduces a new generation of the Dutton family with patriarch Jacob (Harrison Ford) and matriarch Cara Dutton (Mirren).
1923 is set in the early 20th century when the Great Depression, pandemics, historic drought and the end of Prohibition are hitting where the Duttons call home.
