When 1923 premieres it will dig deeper into the past history of the Dutton family and their famous Montana ranch. Fans have already enjoyed watching the series 1883, but will now get to see the family in the roaring twenties. The new prequel will cover the life of John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) great-great-uncle during the Great Depression.
As noted by The Digital Fix, Season 5 of Yellowstone is getting closer, as it premieres on November 13. In fact, the mothership series attracted a record viewership for its latest trailer. No doubt, Taylor Sheridan is hoping that the prequel, 1923, is equally successful. It already has an amazing cast list, led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
In the series, fans will get to know life on the ranch during one of the lowest points in American history. This comes after the Dutton family settled in Montana in 1993. Meanwhile, Harrison Ford is in the lead in his first official TV appearance.
What’s the plot?
The official series synopsis tells us that 1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations. It will reveal their struggle to survive lawlessness, historic drought, Prohibition and an epidemic of cattle theft.
This all happens beneath the cloud of Montana’s Great Depression, which preceded the rest of the nation by almost a decade. Besides historic drought, the twenties were a difficult time in the US, with WWI raging. Sheridan has dramatized some of this struggle from the perspective of the Dutton family.

As already mentioned, Harrison Ford is starring in the prequel as Jacob Dutton, while Helen Mirren leads with him as Cara Dutton. However, the confirmed cast list for the series includes Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton and James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr.
Also starring are Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield, Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell and Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton.
Moreover, Brian Geraghty is in the role of Zane, Aminah Nieves plays Teonna Rainwater, Julia Schlaepfer is Alexandra and Jennifer Ehle is Sister Mary O’Connor. Moreover, Sebastian Roché stars in an as-yet-unknown role.
When does season 1 of 1923 premiere on Paramount?
Luckily, Yellowstone fans don’t have too long to wait, as 1923 premieres on December 18, 2022, The series will be available exclusively on Paramount Plus. Reportedly, the story will be told over two seasons, each including eight episodes.
