During the recent season 5 premiere of Yellowstone, fans were surprised to see a young Lloyd Pierce in a flashback scene. Moreover, the surprise came as the younger version of one of Dutton’s senior ranch hands had such a familiar face. It turns out the actor who played young Lloyd was played by none other than Forrie J. Smith’s son, Forest. It seems production didn’t have far to look for the perfect younger version of Forrie’s Lloyd.
Yellowstone season 5: Forrie J. Smith’s son Forest plays young Lloyd
It was Taste of Country that reported that the actor cast as young Lloyd was Smith’s real-life son, Forest. Meanwhile, Forest first appears in a 20-year flashback where the younger Lloyd spends time with a younger Rip Wheeler, played by Kyle Red Silverstein. During the flashback, Forest is seen walking through the bunkhouse. However, reportedly this isn’t the first time that Forest has played young Lloyd in previous flashbacks.
However, in season 5, he enjoyed more screen time and even got a few lines. At one point of the new flashback, young Lloyd tells young Rip, “Not one good thing happens in town…” Due to this scene, fans were quick to notice the uncanny similarity between the older and younger versions of Lloyd.
Heartbreak in season 5
Besides the uncanny flashback scene, the Yellowstone season 5 premiere started off brutally, with a heartbreaking death. In that episode, a heavily pregnant Monica (Kelsey Asbille) needs to head to the hospital. However, Kayce (Luke Grimes) is busy dealing with a problem on the ranch.
Monica decides to drive herself, along with their son Tate (Brecken Merrill) in the car. Tragically, mother and son are involved in a terrible accident, and it is eventually revealed that the incident caused her to lose her baby.
Even more tragic, Tate, sitting with a broken arm, tells his family, “I had a brother, for an hour, anyway… They named him John.”
Kayce and Monica on Yellowstone
At the end of the episode, viewers see a heartbreaking image of the Dutton family outside of Monica’s hospital room, where Kayce holds her in the bed. Reportedly, prior to the premiere, Grimes told Entertainment Tonight what fans could expect from the fifth season. In fact, he teased that it would be “heavy” for Kayce and Monica. Luke said:
It’s tough. I think the show, the whole thing is the drama. The whole thing is about how much can we put these people through?
Moreover, Grimes said that he thinks this season, “it’s Monica for sure.” He added that she is going through some “pretty heavy stuff” without giving too much away. As for Asbille, she was tight-lipped, so as not to give any major spoilers.
However, she did stress Monica and Kayce’s “forever” kind of love and that they have fought against all odds to be together. Kelsey added, “My goodness, they’ve had a wild ride.” Of course, until the season 5 premiere, fans had no idea just how wild their ride has become.
Fans can catch season 5 of Yellowstone on Sunday nights on the Paramount Network.
