Law & Order SVU Sets Up Kelli Giddish’s Exit

Law & Order SVU Sets Up Kelli Giddish's Exit

After 12 seasons on NBC’s Law & Order: SVU is giving one of their key detectives a memorable send-off. Actress Kelli Giddish announced over the summer that she would exit the long-running crime drama show mid-season saying goodbye to her character, Detective Amanda Rollins.

Her final episode will air on December 8, the Season 24 fall finale, and promises to give the viewers an emotional goodbye to one of the fan-favorite characters.

Giddish Talks Her Exit In A Statement To USA TODAY

In August, Kelli released a statement about her departure to address the speculation that she was leaving the show. She wanted to be upfront and honest and let her viewers know that this would indeed be her last season and how much their support has meant to her.

“Playing Rollins has been one of my life’s greatest joys and privileges. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years,” Giddish continued. “There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s, and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

Giddish made her first appearance on the show in 2007, playing Kara Bawson. Her performance scored her a recurring role as Rollins in Season 13, and she’s been a key player on the show ever since.

Why Is Kelli Giddish Leaving?

According to Variety, Kelli’s departure came from the powers that be upstairs. In other words, the showrunner decided to let her go to make room for other characters in an effort to keep the show as current as possible.

“You might take a moment to entertain the idea that things are more complex than they appear in a world of emojis and tweets. All I’ll say is Kelli has handled this with the most incredibly classy comportment,” showrunner David Graziano said on Instagram. “She is, without a doubt, one of the finest industry professionals I’ve come across in my 24 years of writing television. I’m saddened by her looming exit. It’ll be my lucky day if I ever get to write for her again.”

David made it clear that it wasn’t his decision nor Giddish’s choice to leave the show. He wished he could keep her, but the decision wasn’t his to make.
