As Netflix viewers react to the release of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, it has been met with controversy over the true-life crimes that Dahmer committed. It turns out the role of Dahmer is one of Peters’ most challenging roles. While many viewers are upset over the release. Peters said Ryan Murphy wanted him to approach the series by ensuring the depiction of the killer’s vile crimes was as respectful as possible. In fact, Evan confirmed that the series is intended to be shown more from the side of the victims than the monster himself.

Meanwhile, Peters has worked with Murphy before on a number of installments of American Horror Story and knows how to work with the iconic producer. Moreover, the show is one of Ryan’s most ambitious and risky projects to date.

Peters confirmed: “We had one rule going into this, from Ryan.” That rule was that the story would never be told from Dahmer’s point of view. In fact, as the audience, people are not really sympathizing with the serial killer.

Dahmer’s story has been told before

As noted by the Express, Dahmer’s crimes have been the feature of several documentaries and dramas over the years. The killer has been played before by actors Ross Lynch and Jeremy Renner.

However, with the current popularity of true crime shows, Murphy has taken a different approach. The series focuses on the stories of the victims and the resulting court cases. Evan explained that viewers aren’t “getting into his plight,” but are watching it from the outside. Peters added:

It’s called the Jeffrey Dahmer Story, but it’s not just him and his backstory.

He added that it’s the repercussions. It is about how society and our system failed to stop Dahmer several times due to racism and homophobia. He added that the series is a tragic story that affected everybody and gets their side of the story told, saying:

The Jeffrey Dahmer story is so much bigger than just him.

Meanwhile, Peters said Ryan wanted the series to be as respectful as possible to the victims and their families.
