Good news for Grey’s Anatomy fans as Kate Walsh is set to reprise her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery in season 19. This is the latest huge change to the cast of the hit medical series. As previously reported, Ellen Pompeo will have a limited role in the new season, as she works on a new project. Meanwhile, five new residents are set to join the cast as first-year residents.

Former Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice star, Kate Walsh has previously expressed an interest in a return to the ABC medical drama. Fans will recall that she was previously introduced back to the cast in the season 1 finale. She stayed in the role of a neonatal surgeon until the end of season 3 when she went on to star in Private Practice. However, the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff wrapped in 2013.

During season 18, Addison returned to the show and connected with Dr. Meredith Grey over the death of Dr. Derek Shepherd. However, Variety informs us that Walsh will return to Grey’s Anatomy in a recurring role as Addison in season 19.

Apparently, Walsh’s first appearance in season 19 as Addison is set for episode 3. So far, it is unknown how long she will star in the series, but reports say her role will recur. Meanwhile,  previous comments by Walsh indicate that she is eager to see where her character’s journey takes her.

So far, little is known about the plot of the upcoming season 19 or Addison’s return. However, Kate’s appearance will lessen the sting of Pompeo’s absence during the season. As previously reported, she will only star in eight episodes of the new season but will narrate all episodes. In fact, she is producing and starring in an upcoming untitled limited series for Hulu.

Meanwhile, James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webster will have his hands full with the new surgical residents. As reported before, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho and Midori Francis will join the cast.

As for Kate Walsh, on the day that her appearance in season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy aired, she posted a series of images on Instagram. It was clear how excited she was at that time, as she captioned the photos of her cast mates, writing:

Counting down the minutes until an #Addimelia reunion and oh so much more! Going home to Grey Sloan Memorial is a feeling like none other and I simply cannot wait to do it one more time with all you lovers.

Now, fans can rejoice in the fact that Dr. Addison Montgomery will be starring in the upcoming season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy.
