Recently, at the D23 expo, Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey got together and even teased working together again. Fans will recall that they played the iconic couple, Dr. Meredith Grey and Dr. Derek Shepherd in the long-running hospital drama. In fact, they were together on the show from its start in 2005, until Patrick left the show in 2011.
Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey
Grey’s Anatomy fans will recall Meredith’s famous beach scenes as she lay in a coma, battling COVID-19. The pair found each other on the beach and had touching moments before other characters from the show also featured in the dream scenes.
Recently, Dempsey was asked if there was a chance for them to star together again and he said he did have “some ideas” about how it could work. Speaking to Extra at the D23 event, he said:
I’ll tell her first and then we’ll see if we can realize it. It’s always been a really special relationship Ellen and I have had together in front of the screen and behind it as well.
The Disenchanted star went on to recall the first time he met Ellen and that she had a Boston accent. He said that as he is originally from Maine it was very endearing to him and they had a connection right away. Speaking of the success of Grey’s Anatomy, he added: “People want to believe in love and all of that,” adding:
People around the world, too, were wishing we were actually together. But she’s got Christopher [Ivery] and I have Jillian [Fink], and they’re incredible people, so fortunately they have that with us.
Ellen Pompeo on working together again
As Grey’s Anatomy fans know, Ellen Pompeo will have a reduced role in the upcoming season 19. She told Extra:
I think the fans would love it, and we’d be 100 percent open to it. I would anyway. If the material was right, I think it would be so fun for the fans.
Pompeo went on to say that they have done some of their greatest work together. In fact, she thinks both of them are very proud of the work they have done. Meanwhile, they had a great time doing it and created something really iconic.
Meanwhile, in another part of the interview, Pompeo did note there is someone missing from the show, saying she can’t think of who it is. She added, “Someone who was a big part of the show and it hasn’t been the same without that person.”
Dempsey responded, suggesting “Justin Chambers,” to which Ellen agreed before he started joking about Eric Dane coming back. Chambers was well-loved in his role as Dr. Alex Karev which he played from 2005 to 2020. Meanwhile, Eric Dane was known as Dr. Mark Sloan or, more popularly, Dr. McSteamy in the medical drama.
Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on October 6 on ABC in the US.
