The popular David E. Kelly mystery series Big Sky is about to premiere its third season on ABC. Judging from the trailer, the crime drama will be just as exciting as previous seasons, but with great new cast members. As recently reported, country singer and actress Reba McEntire brings her sardonic touch to the role of a hiking trail owner. Meanwhile, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles is now a series regular. Read on to find out what we can expect from season 3 as it premieres on ABC on September 21 and on Hulu the next day.
Big Sky season 3 episode 1 Deadly Trails
Season 3 of the popular crime drama Big Sky is almost here, with the premiere episode titled Deadly Trails. Again, Jenny Hoyt and Cassie Dewell will be solving crimes, with the latest involving the disappearance of a hiker. In fact, episode 1 will explore a crime centered around a campground and hiking trail, owned by Reba McEntire’s character Sunny Barnes. In fact, said hiking trail has been the subject of other disappearances in the past.
As fans know, Big Sky’s creator, David E. Kelley is a major name in the crime and drama sphere. In fact, he has been involved in many series, including Ally McBeal, Doogie Howser MD, Big Little Lies and The Practice. Meanwhile, Elwood Reid (Hawaii 5-0, The Chi) is the showrunner and executive producer of the show. Moreover, Big Sky is based on the book series by C.J. Box.
Basically, Big Sky follows Jenny Hoyt, a police officer played by Katheryn Winnick along with a private detective, Cassie Dewell, played by Kylie Bunbury. Between them, they investigate crimes in their rural Montana County. Kylie is known from season 3 of the adaptation of Stephen King’s work, Under the Dome as well as in When They See Us.
Cast changes in season 3
To add to the excitement, there has been a number of cast changes, including Jensen Ackles, who had a guest starring role in season 2. However, in season 3 he becomes a series regular as the new sheriff in town. Fans will recall Ackles in the role of Dean Winchester in Supernatural, as well as co-creating the prequel series, The Winchesters. He also currently plays Soldier Boy in Amazon’s The Boys.
Another great addition is Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction, Desperately Seeking Susan) in a recurring role as Jenny’s scam artist mother. Of course, as noted by Entertainment Weekly, another exciting touch is that the “Queen of Country” herself, Reba McEntire also joins the cast. Meanwhile, her character is described by ABC as “very protective and loving and she’s trying to make a living with her family on this glamping thing and she’s working real hard to hold it all together.”
Big Sky season 3 trailer
The trailer for season 3 of Big Sky opens with Sunny Barnes (McEntire) running her Sunny Day Excursions, known as the luxury backcountry experience. Naturally, being a crime drama, it doesn’t take long for reports of missing hikers to appear. In fact, one sign at the end of the trailer reads, “Some trails are not meant to be followed.”
Meanwhile, Jensen Ackles, the charming new sheriff in town, starts working on the case with Cassie and Jenny. Seriously, with a cast like this, we can only expect great things from the third season.
