Many have dabbled with an adaptation of Devil in the White City, based on the book by Erik Larson. Finally, Hulu will be launching a limited series under the same name, with Keanu Reeves starring. Read on to find out what we know so far about the new, exciting project.

Devil in the White City adaptation coming to Hulu

Devil in the White City follows the story of Daniel H. Burnham (Keanu Reeves) a demanding but visionary architect. Burnham races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. It also features Dr. H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer. Meanwhile, Holmes is also the man behind the infamous “Murder Castle” built in the shadow of the Fair.

Hulu released the news on Thursday via a virtual press conference as part of the TV Critics Association press tour.

This will be Reeves’ first major role on American television. Meanwhile, he starred in several TV films early in his career. Meanwhile, he also starred in the Swedish-American web series, Swedish Dicks.

Of course, Keanu is mostly known for his work in The Matrix, John Wick and Bill & Ted franchises. However, he has also appeared in feature films, including Point Break, Speed, My Own Private Idaho, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Constantine.

Behind the scenes of the Hulu limited series

Devil in the White City is executive-produced by Martin Scorses, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Jennifer Davisson, Stacey Sher, Mark Lafferty and Sam Shaw. Meanwhile, Reeves will also executive produce as well as starring in the limited series. Other executive producers are Todd Field and Lila Byock.

Meanwhile ABC Signature will produce the series in association with Paramount Television Studios.

Why was Devil in the White City so long coming?

There have long been plans to adapt the novel, with DiCaprio acquiring the rights in 2010. He planned to adapt it as a film, in which he would have starred as Holmes. However, in 2015, Scorsese came on board to direct the film, while Billy Ray was set to write the script.

According to Variety, The Devil in the White City was first put into development in Hollywood by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner through their deal with Paramount. However, the option lapsed in 2004.

Next step was for Paramount to reacquire the film rights in 2007, with producers Michael Shamberg and Sher. Then, in 2019, Hulu announced that it was developing the novel as a series. Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves was reportedly in negotiations for a lead role in January 2022.
