Grey’s Anatomy is the longest-running scripted primetime series on ABC and has remained popular through the last 18 seasons. With season 19 airing later this year, five new cast members will head to Grey Sloan Memorial in the hospital’s teaching program.

Pictured above, the new cast includes Niko Terho as Dr. Lucas Adams, Adelaide Kane as Dr. Jules Millin, Midori Francis as Dr. Mike Yasuda, Harry Shum Jr. as Dr. Daniel “Blue” Kwan and Alexis Floyd as Dr. Simone Griffin.

Entertainment Tonight recently interviewed Shum, 40, on his new role in Grey’s Anatomy to find out about his character’s intriguing backstory. The Glee and Crazy Rich Asians alum was asked about his nickname “Blue” and responded as follows.

It’s not just ’cause he’s wearing blue right now in scrubs. He comes from a background where he got the nickname, Blue, because he won a lot of blue ribbons. He was… he’s used to winning. But definitely, he might hit a couple of walls and not being used to maybe taking some L’s.

The official description of Shum’s character is that he is a sharp-witted, impatient and brilliant first-year surgical resident. Blue is generous by nature but competitive to a fault. Other hints about his role point to a “family crisis” that interfered with his career plans.

Challenging times during season 19

By the sound of this, Blue will likely have some challenging times ahead as one of the first-year residents. As Grey’s Anatomy fans know well, arrogant young doctors often get a reality check during their time in the hospital. Blue is likely to suffer the same while settling into his job.

While five new cast members are joining Grey’s Anatomy, one fan-favorite star is taking some time off. Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey, is busy filming a new and exciting Hulu orphan/adoption limited series. In fact, she will not only lead the cast but will also executive produce the series. While she will still narrate each episode, she Ellen will only physically star in eight of the upcoming 20 episodes.

With such a shake-up in the cast, season 19 looks to be exciting for fans. While Pompeo will be scarce, maybe the addition of the new residents will make up for this. Meanwhile, keeping things lively will certainly help to keep the ABC medical drama going for at least a couple more seasons.
