Fans will soon see Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo in a different role in the so-far untitled Hulu’s orphan-adoption limited series. In fact, she will play the lead opposite UK actor Imogen Reid in the series, while also acting as executive producer. Read on to find out more about this exciting new project.
Hulu’s new untitled orphan-adoption limited series
The untitled Hulu limited series is created and written by Katie Robbins. The series is inspired by the true story of a Midwestern couple who adopt a young girl (Reid) with a rare form of dwarfism. However, as they start to raise the girl alongside their three other children, things don’t seem right. In fact, they start to suspect that the girl may not be who she says she is.
As they question the orphan girl’s story, they are confronted with hard questions of their own. They have to decide what lengths they are prepared to go to defend themselves and protect their own narrative. This leads to the couple in a battle with the tabloids, the courtroom, and, eventually, their marriage.
Similarities to the 2009 horror movie Orphan
The original shocking case has been compared to the 2009 horror movie Orphan. The background story of the limited series made the headlines in 2019. In it, Kristine Barnett and her ex-husband Michael Barnett faced charges of neglect for allegedly abandoning their adopted daughter, Natalia. The nine-year-old girl suffered from a rare form of dwarfism.
However, the parents believed Natalia, whom they adopted at what they believed was the age of six, was, in fact, a mentally disturbed adult woman. The couple claimed she had threatened their lives. In the long run, most of the charges were dismissed and Natalia continued to deny the accusations that she was an adult con artist.
Behind the scenes of the Hulu limited series
Erin Levy is the showrunner on the series and will executive produce alongside Robbins. Meanwhile, Ellen Pompeo will executive produce via her production banner Calamity Jane, along with Laura Holstein. Moreover, Mike Epps, Niles Kirchner, Dan Spilo and Andrew Stearn will also produce.
