Stranger Things fans are no doubt still in shock over the penultimate and finale episode of season 4. However, the way the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, planned it, it could have been much worse for our friends. This more particularly relates to Sadie Sink’s character, Max, and the torture she suffered at the hands of Vecna. In fact, she wasn’t supposed to make it out of there. Spoilers ahead for those of you that haven’t watched episodes 8 and 9 of season 4 of Stranger Things

The final episodes of season 4 of Stranger Things put Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) through literal hell. In fact, she ended up in a coma with broken bones and was blinded by Vecna. In fact, for one minute, Max died before Eleven revived her fan-favorite friend. However, while her powers are coming back, they weren’t enough to fully bring Max back to life.

Netflix Geeked spoke to the series creators, Matt and Ross Duffer in the Stranger Things aftershow. The two TV geniuses revealed that Max’s fate was originally planned to be clearer and more final. In fact, it wasn’t going to be good news for fans.

Ross Duffer spoke of their tentative plans of killing Max permanently, saying it was discussed as a possibility. In fact, for a while, that is what was going to happen. However, they ended up doing things differently. He said he wanted the season to end with more of a question at the season’s end. He added:

It’s still really dark and if Max is going to be okay, we just don’t really know. We wanted to leave it up in the air moving forward into Season 5.

Stranger Things ‘Empire Strikes Back’ season

Meanwhile, Matt Duffer described season 4 as the “Empire Strikes Back” season, because he and his brother wanted our friends to actually lose. He said they wanted these characters to experience what losing feels like. Teasing a little about season 5, he said:

That was the big idea coming into Season 4, that they were going to lose. We were going to introduce Vecna and they were going to lose to him. That sets our characters up for what will be the ultimate final confrontation with Vecna and with the Upside Down in Season 5.

What about Eddie?

While the fate of Sadie Sink’s character, Max, is still in the air, unfortunately, fans did have to say goodbye to Eddie. The fan-favorite character was killed by demon bats in the Upside Down, leading to Joseph Quinn leaving the show. We weren’t alone in loving Eddie’s character though. Matt Duffer said they fell in love with Eddie, adding:

I think everybody in the cast fell in love with him. We knew he had to die…that’s part of me that wishes he still around for Season 5. That’s ultimately how you want to feel.
