Netflix: Black Mirror Season 6 Is Coming: What We Know So Far

Fans of the popular Netflix dystopian drama series Black Mirror have been waiting three years for season 6 to come. However, problems relating to the show’s rights have finally been solved, leading to the series officially being renewed for a sixth season. Meanwhile, the first cast members have already been found. Read on to find out what we know so far about the sixth season, coming to Netflix.
Black Mirror returning for season 6 on Netflix
The dystopian series Black Mirror first aired on Channel 4 in the UK for its first two seasons. However, since then, Netflix has picked the show up and has so far produced three additional seasons and an interactive special.
Meanwhile, the series comes from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who now work with the streamer exclusively under their Brokes & Bones publishing company. For those who haven’t seen Black Mirror, the official synopsis is as follows:
In an abstrusely dystopian future, several individuals grapple with the manipulative effects of cutting edge technology in their personal lives and behaviors.
Season 5 of the series consisted of three episodes and was released on Netflix on June 5, 2019. Three long years have since gone by.
Why is there a delay with the sixth season?
Black Mirror was put on ice due to disputes with the IP owner, Endemol Shine Group. These reportedly came to a head when Brooker and Jones officially left Endemol Shine Group. They went on to form their own production company with Netflix’s financial help. However, talk of Black Mirror has been missing ever since.
However, Netflix struck a major deal with Brooker and Jones in July 2020, taking a controlling stake in their company, Broke and Bones. Since then, they have released Death to 2020 and Death to 2021, both satires relating to the pandemic. They also released an interactive series, Cat Burglar and Attack of the Hollywood Cliches.
However, relating to Black Mirror, the license is still with the old company, waiting for Netflix and Endemol to come to an agreement. Since that time, Endemol Shine Group has been taken over by new owners, the Banijay Group.
Season 6 of Black Mirror
Soon after season 5 was released, the creators were optimistic about the future of the dystopian series. At that time, Brooker told Yahoo, “Maybe we should cast someone like Barack Obama, he’d be good.”
However, all went quiet again until May 2022 when Variety reported that a deal has been reached. Season 6 is officially in active development at the streamer. However, details of specific stories are being firmly kept under lock and key for now.
One thing that was reported was that season 6 will have more episodes than the fifth season and will be even more cinematic in scope. In fact, each episode will be treated as an individual movie. Meanwhile, this is in line with recent seasons of Black Mirror where episodes often exceeded 6o0 minutes. Moreover, in July 2022, news came of various new cast members for season 6, included below:
- Zazie Beetz (Atlanta)
- Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project)
- Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful)
- Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
- Kate Mara (House of Cards)
- Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick)
- Clara Rugaard
- Auden Thornton
- Anjana Vasan
