Before Yellowstone, people have said for decades that the Wild West is past and bringing it back now is pretty much impossible. It turns out Taylor Sheridan proved cynics wrong by bringing back the western genre in the form of the hit drama series. Yellowstone first aired in 2018 and has grown into five seasons. It has also led to a number of spin-offs and doesn’t look like stopping any time soon. Read on to find out what Kevin Costner, who plays the Yellowstone patriarch, has to say about the popularity of both the show and its spin-offs.
The popularity of Yellowstone
Yellowstone has been renewed for a fifth season and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. However, the hit western drama series has led to a number of equally successful spin-offs. In fact, these include the prequel series 1883, and its own sequel, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. Other titles include 6666 and the recently renamed 1923.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner, who plays the patriarch John Dutton in Yellowstone has spoken up about the prequels, sequels and spin-offs coming from the show. What many fans might not know is Costner has a sense of humor, which was revealed in a recent interview.
Wringing it out
In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Costner discussed Yellowstone and the major success it has been right from season 1. He also revealed his feelings about the fact that the series has led to a sprawling franchise of successful spin-off series. He said:
In America, if something works, you just figure out how to keep making that same idea, work, and work, and work. And you do that. You just wring it out until it won’t give anymore.
Costner noted how much confidence he has that Taylor Sheridan and his team are coming up with the spin-offs intelligently. He also said how much pride he has in paving the way for this to happen.
Kevin Costner the face of Yellowstone
Many believe that Kevin Costner, in his role at John Dutton, is the face of the Yellowstone franchise. However, ironically, Costner’s own father didn’t initially approve of him taking the part. According to the Hollywood actor, his father warned him that he is going to lose his audience. Costner recalled him saying, “That is a naughty show.”
Fast forward to now and clearly, the Dances With Wolves actor made the right choice and it has paid off. Even his dad has changed his tune over Yellowstone. He said with a laugh:
Two years later, he’s going, ‘The nurses wanna [sic] know how it ends.’
In fact, he noted how his father had conveniently forgotten about his former prediction about the show via an interview on the Yellowstone YouTube channel included here:
Meanwhile, based on the remarkable success of the western hit drama series, John Dutton, his family and his ancestors are going to be around for a while yet.
Season 5 of Yellowstone debuts on the Paramount Network on November 13, 2022.
