HBO Max has announced a second season of 30 Coins, together with a surprising new cast member, Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water, John Dies at the End). According to Sensacine, Giamatti will play the role of Christian Barbrow.

Paul Giamatti joins the cast of 30 Coins

The character is an American business and technology billionaire and science fiction writer. Meanwhile, Barbrow is also a science guru, and the leader of a mysterious “Brotherhood” that counts the world’s elite among its members. Moreover, Giamatti’s character is the ultimate disruptor, however, no one knows his true intentions.

About the HBO Max show

30 Coins is directed and co-written by acclaimed horror master Alex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus, Witching & Bitching, The Day of the Beast).  The gripping series takes viewers into a world where nothing is quite as it seems and no one can be trusted. Meanwhile, de la Iglesia also co-writes the horror series along with Jorge Guerricaechevarria.

Speaking to Sensacine (in Spanish), Alex de la Iglesia said that Paul Giamatti is probably one of the best actors in the American film industry. He added:

HBO gives me the incredible opportunity to work with him. I would also like to thank his team who, fortunately, knew my filmography. Thanks for the confidence.

Plot of 30 Coins on HBO Max

Season 1 of 30 Coins runs for eight episodes and follows Father Vergara (Eduard Fernandez). He is an exorcist, ex-convict and boxer who has been exiled by the church as a priest in a remote Spanish town.

Meanwhile, as his past and old enemies start to come back to haunt him, peculiar things start to happen. At this time, Mayor Paco (Miguel Angel Silvestre) and local vet Elena (Megan Montaner) form an unlikely task force. This force seeks the truth, while a cursed coin distorts reality, and is at the heart of a global conspiracy.

Where did season 1 leave off?

The season 1 finale closed with several huge, lingering questions. Among them, we need to know what happened to Father Vergara? Another question is how the town will pick up the pieces in the aftermath of a wild journey. Likely most importantly, what insane demonic creatures will de la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarria call up next?

For those who have yet to watch season 1 of 30 Coins, the first season is available on HBO Max.
