There is no doubt that fans of the popular series Yellowstone can’t wait for season 5 to premiere. However, in the meantime, changes have been made to one of the series’ upcoming prequels, 1932. The title has taken a time travel journey into the past and is now set to be 1923. Why was the change made and what can fans expect from the new Yellowstone prequel?
Yellowstone prequel changed from 1932 to 1923
Recently, the premiere date was announced for season 5 of Yellowstone plus a new installment of the prequel 1883 was revealed. While all this is very exciting for fans, other news broke about the upcoming prequel, 1932. In fact, the series just did a time-warp back to 1923
According to Deadline, the continuation of the Dutton family’s origin story is officially renamed from 1932 to 1923. Reportedly, this change was made to focus on 1923, while including storylines about the end of World War 1 and the start of the prohibition era.
Meanwhile, the new prequel was first revealed in February, shortly before the prequel 1883 miniseries concluded. Since that time, only sparse, but important details were revealed, including the fact that it will premiere in December. One truly important note was that the 1923 cast will include Hollywood actor Harrison Ford and The Queen star, Helen Mirren. While this is obviously exciting, there has been no further news about Ford and Mirren’s roles.
Original synopsis for 1932
Originally, the logline teased that the prequel 1932 would follow a new generation of the Dutton family. The story was to include the early 20th century, with its “pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression.” Did anyone notice that this sounds eerily similar to the current century? But we digress. However, as per Deadline, the 1923 logline is a little different and includes a number of other characters:
1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade.
Previously, Taylor Sheridan had explained why he wanted to show fans more of the past. He said with Yellowstone, he had built this back story of where the Dutton family came from. Meanwhile, with 1932, he said he chose that moment in time to peek back into the family’s past. Sheridan added:
“You’re seeing the children we’ve met in 1883 now attempting to raise another generation of Dutton at the time of the Wild West becoming a playground for the elite from the east.”
Now fans are no doubt wondering if Elsa’s (Isabel May) younger brother, John (Audie Rick) will star in 1923. However, so far, it’s too soon to know.
