The Umbrella Academy spoilers and updates tease that Ben Hargreeves will have a huge transformation in season 3. The actor behind the character, Justin H Min, dropped the teaser during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Min has been through a lot after his alter ego’s ghost saved Viktor (Elliot Page) before he faded away into nothing after hugging his sibling for the last time. The actor thought that it was the last time he’ll ever shoot for the Netflix superhero series.
But the season 2 finale shocked fans after they saw the superpowered siblings return to an alternate reality of their life in the present. Ben is still alive in the altered version where the siblings were darker and more brutal than what fans are used to.
The actor recalled how emotional it was for him when he thought that he would be leaving the show soon.
“I was in a complete haze. I remember going up to my hair and makeup people and being like, ‘thank you so much for being with me on this journey.’ I gave them thank-you cards!” he shared.
The Umbrella Academy Showrunner Talks About The Sparrows
Fans may recall that most of season 2 happened during the 1960s in Dallas. The superpowered siblings prevented another apocalypse. They thought it was all over until they went home when they found a different family living in their house.
Unlike The Umbrella Academy, The Sparrows are well-trained and merciless. They have glaring differences especially when it comes to being a family and superheroes.
“The way I thought about about season 3 is, the Umbrellas are a family that didn’t know how to be superheroes. The Sparrows are superheroes who never knew how to be a family,” Blackman said.
Ben’s Transformation in Season 3
Min’s character in season 3 is a living character who can finally interact with the people around him. In the previous season, his alter ego was simply a ghost and can only interact with Klaus (Robert Sheehan).
“Steve and I really talked at length about this balancing act between nature versus nurture, and what that would do to someone like Ben,” Min shared.
The actor added that “nurture remains a huge striving force behind whoever Ben is and whoever Ben becomes.”
The change in Ben may be unpleasant for some but Blackman explained that he wanted to “bring a whole new life to the character.”
