Fans are looking forward to the upcoming season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale. However, one bit of cast news is that Alexis Bledel’s character, Emily, will be leaving Gilead for good. While fans will remember that June and Emily did reunite in Canada in season 4, she will no longer be on the show.
Alexis Bledel leaves The Handmaid’s Tale before season 5
Alexis Bledel, who has played the character of Emily AKA Ofglen on The Handmaid’s Tale since it first aired in 2017, is leaving the Hulu drama. Bledel made the announcement in a statement on Friday, May 27. “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time.”
Bledel said she is “forever grateful” to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily. She also thanked Hulu, MGM, and the cast and crew of the series for their support.
According to TVLine, while starring in The Handmaid’s Tale for four years, Bledel earned four Emmy nominations. She also had one win for her performance in the adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s iconic novel.
Prior to starring in The Handmaid’s Tale, Alexis was best known for her role as Rory Gilmore with Lauren Graham in Gilmore Girls. She later starred in the revival show, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Meanwhile, Bledel also starred in Mad Men and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale aired from April to June 2021. Meanwhile, the gripping series tells the story of handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) as she fights against the oppressive Gilead as a rebel leader. However, the risks June takes bring her unexpected new challenges. In fact, her quest for revenge and justice threatens to destroy her most cherished relationships, including her marriage and motherhood.
Bledel’s character, Emily was the handmaid Ofglen and managed to escape to Canada. Fans last saw her in the finale of season 4 of the Bruce Miller-led series. In that finale, Emily bands with June and other former handmaids in an effort to exact revenge on Gilead.
Besides Bledel and Moss, other cast members of season 4 included Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Max Minghella, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, O-T Fagbenle and Sam Jaeger.
When can fans expect season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale?
The Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for a fifth season. According to RadioTimes, filming of season 5 started in February 2022 and is expected to finish in July 2022. However, currently, a premiere date for the fifth season has yet to be announced.
