As season 4 of New Amsterdam closes, Sandra Mae Frank, who plays Dr. Elizabeth Wilder has some good news. She joined the cast of the NBC show at the start of season 4 in a recurring capacity. However, in season 5 Frank will be a season regular throughout.
New Amsterdam season 5 and Sandra Mae Frank
The upcoming and final fifth season of New Amsterdam is to feature more of Sandra Mae Frank in her role as Dr. Elizabeth Wilder. TVLine confirmed the good news on Tuesday, May 14. Meanwhile, Frank also shared the news on her Instagram account. Fans will recall that Frank joined the cast in a recurring capacity during season 4.
Back in the season 4 premiere of New Amsterdam, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) interviewed Dr. Wilder, a deaf surgeon. She was to replace Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), as the hospital’s new medical director. However, Dr. Wilder decided not to take the job, but still joined the staff as Chief of Oncology. Meanwhile, Frank went on to star in 12 of the 22 episodes of season 4.
Season 4 finale
The finale of season 4 of New Amsterdam aired on NBC on Tuesday, at 10 pm ET. In that episode, the cast is handling a weather crisis, while Max and Helen are about to marry. Viewers will recall that in the May 17 episode, Helen was flying from London to New York to attend her own wedding.
Speaking of the finale, David Schulner, executive producer of New Amsterdam, said that no one in the hospital was planning for the hurricane to hit. It was supposed to be heading to the Carolinas but abruptly changed direction. This led to the hospital staff having to handle something that wasn’t on their radar hours before.

Schulner is the creator of New Amsterdam which was inspired by the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer. Since it first debuted in September 2018, the show has become a huge hit for NBC.
However, in March, NBC announced that season 5 will be the last of the medical series and will feature 13 episodes. In fact, according to Schulner, the season 4 finale was already written when he found out season 5 would be the last.
“The finale is more reflective of [Episode] 401 than anything having to do with Season 5. You end where you begin,” he said. “And so we wanted 401 to kind of set up this trajectory for Max and Sharpe, and this is clearly where it was leading to.”
