Plot of the 10-part Netflix limited series
Known as the Milwaukee Monster or the Milwaukee Cannibal, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was a notorious serial killer and sex offender. Between 1978 and 1991, Dahmer murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys. Moreover, many of the murders involved cannibalism, necrophilia and preservation of body parts. Meanwhile, some of his victims were underage, while many were persons of color.
While Dahmer, 34, was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a psychotic disorder and schizotypal personality disorder, he was found to be legally sane at his trial. Meanwhile, after being convicted of 16 murders, Dahmer was beaten to death by a fellow inmate in 1994, only two years into his sentence.
According to Deadline, Monster is expected to span the 60s, 70s, 80s and conclude with Dahmer’s arrest in 1991. It is further expected to take a more psychological approach than other adaptations of the serial killer’s story. It will also cover how the murders were allowed to continue.
Netflix’s official plot for the series, Monster tells the story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers. It is largely told from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims and will look at the police incompetence that led to the Wisconsin native being able to go on a multi-year killing spree.
Meanwhile, the limited series dramatizes at least 10 instances where Dahmer was almost arrested, but ultimately was let go. Moreover, the series will likely touch on white privilege, as Dahmer was a clean-cut, attractive white man. He was often given a free pass by the police and judges who were lenient after he was charged with petty crimes.
Cast of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
It was announced in March 2021 that Ryan Murphy’s longtime collaborator Evan Peters is cast in the title role. Peters was seen in many seasons of Murphy’s American Horror Story. Meanwhile, Richard Jenkins (Berlin Station, The Shape of Water) and Penelope Ann Miller star as Lionel and Joyce Dahmer, the serial killer’s parents.
Meanwhile, Niecy Nash will star as Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor, who called the police several times and even called the FBI in an effort to report his erratic behavior, to no avail.
