Regardless of what the cause may be, when you start to feel anxious, it can be absolutely terrifying. There’s nothing scarier than feeling out of control. The moment that the stress starts to seep into your mind, you should take action. Here are just a few things that you can try which may help you relax.
Focus your attention on something
Rather than obsessing over the thing that’s making you feel anxious, you need to focus your attention elsewhere. Notice how you’re breathing, what you can smell, and what you can see around you. It may help to list a few objects you can see in your mind. Doing so will help you take your mind off the negative thought patterns and help you just take a break for a second.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol
While you may love a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, the last thing you should be doing right now is drinking either of them. Needless to say, these drinks will only make you feel more out of control, and so you need to avoid them. Have a camomile tea if you feel that you need something warm to drink.
Countdown from 20
Again, you absolutely have to draw your attention away from the thing that’s worrying you. One technique that many people suggest is the countdown trick. When you feel stressed out, start from 20 and countdown until you reach one. By the time you get there, you should feel a little less frantic.
Practise breathing deeply
When people are anxious their breathing becomes erratic, short, and fast. This is no good for you at all and you will not be able to calm down while it’s happening. Try some deep breathing exercises along the way. They should help you get your breathing in check in no time at all. Remember, your mind needs oxygen to think straight. Don’t deprive it!
Eat something healthy
When was the last time that you ate? Can you even remember? You might not have much of an appetite right now, but it’s crucial that you get some food inside you. Make a healthy snack and try to eat as much of it as possible.
Talk to someone you trust
Finally, one of the major things that you need to understand is the fact that there is no shame in feeling anxious. Confide in someone who you trust and tell them just how you’re feeling. You will feel less alone in an instant and they might just give you some great advice.
