On Veteran’s Day you probably watched a parade and took part in patriotic activities to remember the brave men and women who keep the country safe. Have you ever wanted to do something more to honor our veterans, but weren’t sure how?
There is a fantastic way that you can show your appreciation year round, not just one day a year! Have you heard about the “Greenlight a Vet” program? The idea behind the initiative is to display your support in a very visible way, 365 days a year.
The “green” idea is simple and inexpensive. You participate in this grassroots movement by buying a green light bulb and using it where others can see. Good places are your front or back porch or inside a small table lamp by a window.
So, why is the color green used? According to the Greenlight a Vet website, “green is the color of hope, renewal, and well-being. “Greenlight” is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The simple gesture of changing one light to green creates a beacon of support and appreciation, and a visible symbol of our commitment to “greenlight” veterans forward as valued members of our communities.”
If you’re like me you’ve probably seen a green porchlight in your neighborhood, and wondered about the unique bulb; did they run out of regular light bulbs? Well, now you know!
Once you’ve got your own green bulb in place, it’s time to join this awesome community of like-minded citizens. Be sure to go to the website and add your location to the online green light map. All you need to enter is your zip code, and a marker will be added to the map.
Right now there are over 4,800,000 green lights represented. Wouldn’t you love to be the light that puts the map over the five million mark?
But don’t stop there! You can continue to spread the word about green lights and vets by sharing a post on social media using the hashtag #greenlightavet.
Hope everyone had a Happy Veteran’s Day everyone!
