Mistakes to Avoid for the Vegetarian Newbie

If you have decided to take a hold of the vegetarian lifestyle, this is a huge step for you. However, there are some mistakes that vegetarian newbies make that you will need to try and avoid.

Getting your diet information from the wrong sources – If you have made the decision to go vegetarian after you just read a magazine article where your favorite singer is endorsing a vegetarian lifestyle, you want to read other sources at this point. One of the most common mistakes is that people that don’t plan their diet right can suffer from vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin B12. You can avoid vitamin deficiencies by getting the right information from the right sources like your physician or registered dietician.

Loading up on refined carbs – While it is true that foods like pretzels, chips, bread and white pasta are all vegetarian, they are certainly far from healthy. These foods are loaded with sugar and calories with no nutritional value and little fiber. While you can eat some carbs, you need to ensure you are eating the right carbs. Carbs like produce and whole grains contain more fiber and less sugar.

Eating too much cheese – There are many vegetarians that start out by eating lots of cheese in order to get their protein. It is important to note that an ounce of cheese has 7 grams of fat and 100 calories. You don’t need to completely cut cheese from your diet but as far as protein, you can get this from foods like lentils and beans.

Not getting enough protein – It is important that your vegetarian diet consists of protein-enriched foods like seeds, nuts and vegetables. Vegetables that are high in protein include peas, spinach, broccoli, corn and Brussel sprouts. High protein foods are crucial to not only weight loss but your overall health as well.

Snacking too much – One of the biggest mistakes new vegetarians make is cutting meat from their diet and loading up on snacks like cookies, chips and pretzels. These processed snacks are certainly allowable on the vegetarian diet but the problem is that they have worthless fuel that will make you pack on some extra pounds. If you love to snack, try munching on almonds with raisins, air-popped popcorn and carrot sticks with peanut butter.

    Great tips! Even if you’re not a vegetarian, these are great tips. More veggies, less processed food is always a win. (With 2 teenage boys, we eat lots and lots of red and black beans. Good source of protein and cheap!)

    I was a vegetarian for 6 years before I married my carnivorous husband. I’m back to eating meat, but prefer a more veggie filled diet. I did make the mistake of overloading on refined carbs being a vegetarian at first and slowly made some really important changes!

    I can see how people would make those mistakes. I have tried in the past to go vegetarian. I couldn’t do it because my family wasn’t interested. We have meatless mondays though.

    I’ve known a few friends who have tried to be vegetarian and stopped because they felt weaker and not as healthy. I imagine this is one of the reasons why. This is a great list of things to be aware of before becoming a vegetarian.
