How to Honor the Troops on Memorial Day +Camouflage Cupcake Recipe

How to Honor the Troops on Memorial Day +Camouflage Cupcake RecipeFor millions of Americans, Memorial Day signals the unofficial start of summer. But it’s also a great time to reflect on the meaning that this significant day has for our country and its generations of free men and women.

Memorial Day has its origins in Decoration Day, an event created to honor Civil War soldiers. Eventually, the day was designated as an occurrence to recognize all of the men and women who died serving their country.

Most cities recognize the holiday with parades and memorial services. If you would like to honor our troops, here are a few memorable ways to do so.

Show your gratitude by flying the flag! The American flag is the ultimate symbol of respect for our troops: it represents all that they are fighting for.

The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization that assists wounded troops through free services and programs that address their unique needs. You can make a donation on their website, and find out more about how you can help troops in your area.

Saying a heartfelt “thank you,” to our troops speaks volumes. You can personally express your sentiment whenever you see a uniformed soldier in public, or you can send a written salutation.

A Million Thanks is an organization that will forward your written letters to troops. According to their website the group, “provides support and appreciation to our active and veteran military men and women through sending letters….”

You can also visit one of the VA’s National Cemeteries for a Memorial Day Ceremony. Once there you can also honor our troops’ memory by placing flowers and flags on veterans’ graves.

Do you know a vet or their family? You can show your gratitude for their service by volunteering your time as a small gesture of appreciation, i.e., such as offering to help with household or yard chores, or running an errand.
