Nationwide provided me with information regarding its In The Nation blog post.
Last year my family and I packed up and relocated. The moving process was pure madness. If only I had known then what I read on Nationwide’s blog, our moving experience would have been so much easier! Their moving tips and tricks are perfect for families that are in the process of relocating!
When my family and I were moving, I decided to just “dive in,” to the packing process…and it was 100% the wrong plan of attack and created total mayhem and disorganization. If you want your move to be smooth, you absolutely have to plan ahead of time.
As Nationwide points out on their blog, your first task should be to get organized, and create a pre-move checklist. You can download and print out a copy of the checklist right here, it’s full of items almost everyone forgets to do, like updating your mailing address, changing your checks at the bank, notifying the utility companies, and so on.
Also, you’re going to want to contact your moving company ahead of time. Not only will it ensure that they will be available for the big moving date, but if you schedule months in advance, a lot of companies also give you a discount!
One thing I am proud to say that I did do right, was holding a massive yard sale before we began packing – which Nationwide also recommends. There’s nothing sillier than packing up garbage and items you no longer use, and then paying a moving company to transport them to your new house. Moving is exciting, and is all about a fresh start, don’t take your old clutter with you!
The next moving list that you absolutely have to download from Nationwide is the “Packing Supply List.” Trust me, there is nothing more frustrating than realizing on moving day that you don’t have enough supplies, and having to fill trash bags with your family’s clothes and bedding. So embarrassing when your new neighbors see the bags being carried into your new house!
Nationwide also shared some amazing moving tips that I wish I had known sooner! For example, you can color coordinate all of your boxes with colored packing tape so that you know what room they go in. And, you should always designate a “First Night Box” full of everything that your family will need to get through their first night in the new house. For example: coffee, toothbrushes, pajamas, snacks, nightlights, toilet paper, etc.
Once you are all moved into your new house and everything is unpacked and in its new designated place, your work is not done! Do a final inspection of your old house, make sure all of the rooms are cleared out and clean, and you did not forget anything.
You want to ensure that your family is safe and protected in your new home too, so you should always change the locks, and make sure you have a working fire extinguisher and carbon monoxide detector on hand. Of course, you’ll want to make sure your home and belongings are safe too, and that’s where Nationwide comes in, make sure you are covered with homeowner’s or renter’s insurance!
The moving process can be stressful, but In The Nation’s “Tips to Ease the Moving Experience” can make it so much easier! If you or anyone that you know is moving in the near future, you would be doing yourself a serious injustice by not heading over to Nationwide’s blog post and printing out their moving checklists!
